My advice is to tap into your personal and professional networks. It’s easy to feel a little lost in today’s job market but networking really can make all the difference. Having a direct connection to people working in your field can expose you to hidden job openings before they’re even posted. Those connections can also give you a key recommendation that will help to make your application stand out from the rest.
Network with your professional peers through LinkedIn, professional organizations, or by keeping in touch with your former colleagues and your former classmates. Ask around about companies within your networks that are hiring and always let the employer know if someone internal referred you to the position that you are applying for. If you don’t have a lot of professional or personal contacts in the field that you’re looking for work in get connected through other means such as community organizations, civic groups, or through volunteer work. And don’t be afraid to utilize social media in your job search to expand your network and make those connections.
